Owing to under-investment in public transport, cars are the
chief means of transportation in Los Angeles. Los Angeles, tend to be
“sprawled” or spread out, so there is often literally no alternative means of
getting from point-to-point in most of California, or for that matter, most of
America.
If you hold a Malaysia Driving License, you can rent a car but
it is best to have an international driver license so that when the police stop
you, he/she can recognize that it is legitimate. There are car rentals in
Westwood. If you are under 21 or 20, basically forget about getting one as it
will be impossible to rent one from major rental companies or avoid a huge
amount of surcharges. If the driver is under 25, there is also usually an extra
free but some will waive it. It will be difficult to get a big and luxurious
car if you are under 25 (not like you can afford it.)
If you plan to buy car, there are many options out there. Some dealers have sales towards the end of year or during thanksgiving. However, parking will be an issue as UCLA doesn't have a lot of parking spots. Apartments might offer a spot for $100 or more per month. If you live near UCLA, it is not advisable to own a car.
