Facilities

The John Wooden Center is UCLA’s main gym. It is named after the late legendary UCLA basketball coach, John Wooden. The gym is well equipped with  basketball, racquetball, squash, badminton, and volleyball courts, weight-lifting equipment, bicycles, treadmills, and an indoor rock wall.  All UCLA students are allowed to use the facilities at the gym since the fees have been included as part of the tuition fees. No slippers or sandals allowed in the Wooden Center due to safety reasons.

For those in the dorms, there are fitness rooms located in De Neve, Rieber Vista or Hedrick Hall if you do not feel like walking too far but the equipment is limited to bicycles and treadmills. The Sunset Canyon Recreation Center aka Sunset Rec located behind Hedrick Summit has two large swimming pools, a sand volleyball court, and a large lawn.

The Drake Track Stadium is a track field open to students when not in use for competitions or training. Running around the campus is another option but some might find the hilly environment unsuitable.

UCLA is home to the Los Angeles Tennis Center which currently hosts the Los Angeles Open and the annual Spring Sing concert. Students are free to use 8 courts when it is not being used for competitions or special events.

The UCLA Marina Aquatic Center in Marina del Rey has facilities for water activities including sailing, kayaking, rowing and surfing. Anyone with a Bruincard is eligible to kayak up to two hours per visit for free.

UCLA Recreation, UCLA Rec for short, is the body that oversees these facilities and it offers a number of fitness, exercise and dance classes. Students can enroll in these classes online with some registration fees. However, students are allowed to try out the classes during Week 1 for free without enrolling.

Nature lovers and hikers would be glad to learn about UCLA Outdoor Adventures which organizes weekend trips hiking or backpacking trips to various popular natural destinations around California such as the Yosemite, Grand Canyon, Death Valley, Kings Canyon and Sequioa National Parks. Equipment can be rented from the Outdoor Adventures Center. The price might be on the steep side for some but the experienced gained makes it worthwhile.
