Taking a class Pass/Not Pass (P/NP) means that it counts only
for credit, and is not weighted into your Grade Point Average (GPA). But
rumor has it that some graduate school will take P/NP as C or C-. So talk to
your counselor.
In general, classes that are part of your major requirements
cannot be taken P/NP. You can, however, take most electives and breadth classes
P/NP.
Speak to the professor and maybe he/she will let you take the
exam at alternate time or date. If not, take other classes. It is unlikely
professor will allow you to do so for a finals, so prioritize your major
classes first.
Avoid having 3 exams in a same day.
Credit policies vary by college and can be subject to change.
For “A” Level students, you can claim some credit if you have at least C or B
in your examination.
Math
– Math 31 series and possibly 32 series if you have Further Math
Physics –
1A and maybe more
Chemistry
– 20 series and lab
Biology –
not sure
Economics – not
sure
Bring your syllabus and final papers if available (past years
will do) to show to the department what you have learnt. It will give them a
great idea what you have done and make their job easier.
For IB and Form 6 students, please check with each department
for each subject you wish to claim credit from. For chemistry, contact
chemistry department and so on. For ADP students, it is very unlikely you will
get any credits or classes waived as it is not recognized by UCLA. Start
emailing them now!!! One of our senior members still has not received exemption
for his first year lab until now, so that tells you how important it is to
start early.
Except engineering students, all students need to fulfill a
second language requirement. For most Malaysians, please submit your SPM
certificate or equivalent examination to waive this requirement.
Unless you have IB or A-Levels Math, science major students (and
maybe other non-science students) will need to take a math placement test
before he/she can enroll in any math classes.
The placement test will determine whether you will need to take
Math I or straight into your main Math classes.
There might be other placement test for different majors. Make
sure you check them out.
Take English Comp 3 by the end of your first year. Before taking
it, you need a placement test unless you scored higher than 670 in your SAT I
Writing. If you fail the test, you will need to take English Comp 2 before you
can proceed to English Comp 3. If you have higher than 670 in your SAT, you can
opt to take a test and if you pass it you can waive English Comp 3.
There is a fee to take this test, so bring your check to pay it
when you submit the test paper or pay in advance. Bring your student ID or
passport when you take this test. The test requires you to write a long essay
with 5 choices given (this was few years back). In past years, there have been
test sessions offered during the orientation period. Do take this test as soon
as you can to avoid being blocked from taking some classes especially writing
classes.
