It is a traditional American college rivalry between the UCLA
Bruins (sports teams) and the USC Trojans. The rivalry between the two is among
the more unusual in NCAA Division I sports because both campuses are only 12
miles apart and both are located within the same city. The close proximity of
both alumni and students, and the likelihood of encountering each other and
interacting on a daily basis make this one of the most intense college
rivalries in the United States. Our committee members have been booed by the
Trojans even as far as Atlanta when they were traveling.
Beat ‘SC Week (“Blue and Gold
Week”) is the week before the American football game between UCLA and USC
around the end of November. Things can get intense during that week as USC
people will try to vandalize our mascot, the Bruin Bear with paint or something
worse. That is when you will see the bear being “protected” in a box and a sign
reading “THE BRUIN BEAR IS HIBERNATING. BEAT ‘SC”. It is advisable to avoid
wearing anything red during that week as Bruins can be very fanatic when it
comes to college sports. Even though our football team is not doing as great as
we would like, in general UCLA has the most championships in NCAA Division I
with 108 titles and still counting followed by Stanford University at 103.
Spring Sing
This is an annual music competition held annually in May and is one of the major UCLA traditions. Students basically camp out in line at the Central Ticket Office the night before tickets are sold. Performances range from solos, duets, bands and a capella groups (which are pretty popular.) Celebrities are invited to judge the performances and have included former president Ronald Reagan, conductor Andre Previn, model Janice Dickinson and singer Sara Bareilles. It used to be held in the Los Angeles Tennis Center but increasing numbers led to the move to Pauley Pavilion. Due to the current renovation going on in Pauley Pavilion which would probably end later this year, Spring Sing returned to the Los Angeles Tennis Center for the past two years.
