Clothing

As for clothing, you can wear anything that you wear in Malaysia (T-shirt, shorts, singlet/tank tops) and perhaps a sweater or jackets for cooler nights for late spring, summer and early fall. During winter, you might want to wear something thicker like a long-sleeved shirt, jackets/hoodies and jeans. (Gloves and long johns are not needed unless you really cannot stand cold weather). Buy your winter clothes here as you will have more varieties and they are cheaper too if bought at the end of the season. Bring enough undergarments to last 1-2 weeks and also some formal wear for interviews and formal events. As an international student, it would be good if you brought along a traditional outfit (not necessary though.)

The folks at UCLA do not really follow any particular dress code. Some dress casually even for classes where you might find people in singlet, shorts and flip-flops or even in their pajamas (American type.) Of course, that does not mean that one can show up in T-shirt and shorts at job fairs or formal events. People do go to 8am class in pajamas, including some of us. Hoodies are very common here for everything. When you see someone dressed formally on certain days, they might be pledging for their fraternities.
